Residents have expressed concerns about a disconnect between citizens and new industry. It will be important to explore ways to attract businesses that create long-term, sustainable employment and positive community impact. New and innovative approaches to economic development can help strengthen opportunities for local workers and families.

The City has taken steps to address crime and create collaborative spaces, but additional strategies may be needed to continue making progress. Downtown business owners consistently share concerns about safety, attracting customers, and maintaining a thriving commercial environment. A comprehensive and transparent strategy—developed in collaboration with business owners and employees—would help guide future improvements.

Municipal transportation will be a key focus, requiring a review of all current routes and system efficiencies. This means addressing the community concerns that have emerged around the new Sault Loops bus routes, the downtown terminal relocation, and active transportation infrastructure. Above all, we must listen to the people who actually ride these systems, so we can refine the Sault Loops routes to work better for the community they serve.

Emergency response services are essential to community well-being. Crime is a multi‑factor issue, and it will be important to explore how City Hall can support community partners in improving safety. Learning from other municipalities that have successfully reduced crime may provide useful insights. The goal is to ensure the city is on solid footing for future councils to continue strengthening safety and wellness.

Sustainable planning means prioritizing the revitalization of existing buildings, projects, and community centres;  renovating current assets rather than investing in new ones as a first consideration and a critical approach to long-term affordability. At the same time, the city must pursue sustainable growth, but not at the risk of local neighbourhoods; proposals like AI data centres must be carefully reviewed before any investment. The goal is to reduce cost and make full use of existing space for current needs.

Sault Ste. Marie is a sports-oriented community. Exploring ways to support facilities for soccer, swimming, skating, pickleball and other activities could help position the city as a destination for regional, national, and international sporting events. Strengthening or renovating existing infrastructure may create new opportunities for tourism and local business revenue.

Residents have noted a visible increase in addiction and substance-use challenges. These issues contribute to housing instability, homelessness, crime, financial strain, and impacts on family well-being. A multi‑stage, collaborative approach is needed - one that includes community-based supports, regional partnerships, social workers, and lessons learned from other Northern communities. Public education and advocacy for provincial and federal support are also important components.

Housing remains a significant concern. The City shares responsibility with community stakeholders to develop solutions for affordable housing. Because housing challenges are multi‑factor, they require coordinated, multi‑stage responses rather than singular approaches.

Road conditions are a common concern among residents. Ensuring that Public Works is properly funded and supported will help improve responsiveness to roads requiring significant repair. In addition, effective road maintenance plans are critical for our community. Above all, we must remember why municipal governments exist.

Many constituents have expressed a desire for greater transparency in city spending and hiring. Strengthening checks and balances can help increase public trust and ensure processes are fair and accountable. Residents have also shared that they would like to see more collaboration among councillors. Building trust and working cooperatively can help support progress on shared priorities.
